I recently had the pleasure of visiting one of our students, Bhagyashree, in Mumbai. She had come to participate in the visiting students program at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research. Bhagyashree is one of our new students, sponsored for the first time this year for the second year of her Masters in Arts.
Bhagyashree has struggled in order to complete her education, her father is an alcoholic and does not work and her mother and grandfather are the ones who support the family. Determined to complete her education, Bhagyashree managed to afford her college fees by giving tuitions in English and mathematics to younger students. Despite all of these hardships she passed out 5th in her university for her B.A. program.
Bhagyashree is majoring in economics for her M.A. and was extremely excited to be accepted to IGIDR for the research program as it’s a fantastic opportunity for her to expand her knowledge and learn from an experienced mentor. Her research paper is on “Measuring the Trade Openness of South Asian Economies to the World Economy”.
Having the scholarship meant that Bhagyashree didn’t have to worry about where her fees were coming from, her university had let her enroll without paying them, telling her to give them later as they knew what an excellent student she is.
Bhagyashree knows what she wants to do in life, after finishing her Masters she plans to take NET exams to become a lecturer in economics. She’s an incredibly bright girl and I’m looking forward to the day when I’ll see her research papers published in nationwide journals. We all wish her the very best!
