Help A Child Scholarship Ceremony

On the 16th June we held a function to present the first installment cheques for the students who have received sponsorship for the coming year so far. While not all students could attend the ceremony as some were not yet on holidays or lived too far away, around 200 students turned up, wearing their best clothes and excited.

I saw many familiar faces amongst them, both from the interviews we had just concluded and the other students whom I have met in the past. Kavita brought her little brother Vijay along with her, Shweta sat proudly in the front row, waiting to be felicitated for her first prize in Physics. The hall held a mixture of old students and new, those who would be receiving sponsorship for the first time and those for whom it was their second, third or even fourth year.

We started with music, Sahebi Nadaf who is the daughter of weavers and now studying for her Bachelor of Business Administration, sung a beautiful song about Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning. There were some speeches both from the old students and the officials present before we got down to the business of calling the students up one by one to receive their sponsorship letter and cheque.

Afterwards there was plenty of time to catch up as the students chattered amongst themselves and came up to say hi. The high school students also went to collect their books from the book bank, preparing to carry the heavy texts home with them.

At the end of the day I was happy, it was my first scholarship giving function and it was fantastic to see the students so excited but there is still so much work to do. We have assigned the available funds on the basis of greatest need but many students are still waiting and I’m hoping that in the days to come we will be able to raise enough funds for them also.

Here’s some photos of the event for you all:
